The Daily Love (TDL) founder Mastin Kipp touches more than 250,000 people every day with inspirational messages he posts on Twitter. But just as motivating as Kipp’s personal thoughts and quotes—culled from the likes of Henry David Thoreau and Steven Spielberg—is the entrepreneur’s path to success.
Kipp’s journey began in 2004 when he founded his own management company at age 22 after leaving a senior position in A&R at Geffen Records. “It required a lot of courage, faith and belief in myself,” he says. “I had none of those things.” Looking for advice, Kipp—who calls Venice home— sought out the writings of great thinkers and respected entrepreneurs, including Buddha, Sir Richard Branson and David Geffen.
Upon realizing his findings were applicable to many other people’s lives, Kipp created an e-mail list in 2007 to share them. In a year, the list grew from 20 to 1,000 people, which encouraged Kipp to develop the website thedailylove.com and a Twitter account through which he could divulge his personal insights on life. In 2009 TDL became an overnight sensation when Kim Kardashian tweeted about Kipp’s moving words to more than 2 million people.
Today The Daily Love has more than 250,000 Twitter followers (Kipp tweets, on average, 17 times a day) and 30,000 subscribers to his free daily e-mail. This fall Kipp also launched Self Approved Clothing Ltd., a line of T-shirts with inspirational messages (available through his website and selfapproved.com),
as well as his TDL blog featuring guest celebrity and wellness writers. “If there’s anything you feel you’re holding back, all you have to do is express yourself as authentically as possible,” says Kipp. “There’s an audience out there for everybody.”
