We tapped five LA party planners to share their best tips for throwing the perfect fête to (unofficially) welcome summer this Memorial Day Weekend.
“It’s wonderful to provide a parasol, shade, or a fan when having outdoor parties. You want your guests to remember how amazing the party was—not how hot the day was. And, remember to place your flowers out as late as possible, so the sun doesn’t drain their natural beauty.”
“I prefer the nighttime Memorial Day party. For décor, I like to use floating, light-up spheres in red, white, and blue in the pool. Colored LED candles behind a bar and around the glassware can create some beautiful reflections around the room. For the passed appetizers, use white trays with red flowers and blue acrylic picks.”
“Memorial Day is all about remembrance. Customize a memorable tabletop by using sentimental pieces. Or, design a tablescape of framed forgotten photos spanning generations. You could also consider busting out a treasured family recipe that no one has tasted in years.”
“Interactive activities are a must: photobooths, games, contests, a social media board—anything to help break up the cliques and groups of people that are too shy to meet new people. Sometimes it’s best to get [guests] out of their comfort zones.”
Cove says: "Grill up a fresh, flavorful, and healthy barbecue of marinated fish and zesty tequila lime grilled chicken. You can also serve a colorful dish like shrimp ceviche paired with a fresh fruit slushy for a crisp, clean taste that is both delicious and aesthetically pleasing. [And], put together a great playlist. We suggest incorporating a hint of contemporary reggae.”
