You would never know it, but TV host Jessica Holmes had a shy phase from middle school to high school. “I wasn’t that kid in the school plays or the choir,” she says of her childhood in Florida. “I didn’t want to have the spotlight on me at all.” Today this former quiet child is best known for her bubbly personality and likable demeanor as one of the anchors of KTLA Morning News at 9.
Holmes got her start in TV when a Nickelodeon producer saw her walking down the hallway as an intern and handpicked her to cohost SlimetimeLive. “Part of my job description was to get slimed and pied on a daily basis,” she says. “You can’t really beat that for a day of work.” In 2005 after a stint in New York, she packed up and headed to Los Angeles. “I didn’t know anybody so I’m not sure what I was thinking,” she says. “Being in television was such a fun job; I wasn’t really sure what else I could do.”
Unbeknownst to her, Holmes’ agent had submitted her for KTLA’s realityshow- type competition segment “The Audition,” which was actually a search for the news team’s next weatherperson.
Holmes won and began reporting the weather. Within a month KTLA had her doing traffic from its HD Telecopter. Two years later, the network added a nine o’clock hour to the morning news and asked her to be the anchor. “I think one thing KTLA is so great about is that I walked in a beginner, and I was never censored or told not to wear my hair a certain way,” says Holmes. “I was encouraged to just be myself.”
What’s your New Year’s resolution?
“I’m such a procrastinator, and it’s always gotten me in trouble. It’s a recurring resolution [to stop procrastinating].”
