As the summer season winds down, we asked some of our favorite LA tastemakers to share what’s still on their summer bucket lists. Read on for some inspiration….
"If you are familiar with my photography, then you already know I have a thing for wild animals in unexpected environments—just take my series 'Gray Malin at the Parker,' for example. With that in mind, I can easily answer this question with Malibu Wine Safaris! One of my friends went on this wine tour recently and had the best time. Since then, I've been trying to find a weekend in my calendar to get a group of friends together to go on a wine sipping safari adventure. It's a summertime must."
"I’d like to go hiking at Mt. Waterman in the San Gabriel Mountains. I’d also like to fit in a Kundalini yoga session at Nine Treasures Yoga because a girl's gotta get her sat nam on. I love hitting up flea markets and thrift stores for good vintage finds. I've included some in our Basic Terrain pop-up at Satine on Third Street [open through August 15]. I brought in a mix of vintage, our collection, and other brands that I really dig like Surf Bazaar, Pret-a-Surf, and Lulu Frost, and created a place where I'd love to shop, within a place that I love to shop. Finally, I’m planning lots of visits to Jon and Vinny’s. The food is so damn good there and they play killer music. I really need to check out the breakfast, too. I hear it’s banging."
"A visit to Hinoki & the Bird is number one on my LA summer bucket list. Between the sumptuous cuisine and wonderfully crafted cocktail list, this is one spot every Angeleno must try. I am looking forward to a lobster roll on the patio paired with a few delicious libations."
"Before the summer ends, I’m planning a farmers market cooking challenge. We’ll meet at the Hollywood Farmers Market (one of my favorite places in LA), and I’ll send each person out separately to shop. Then we’ll regroup at my house to prepare lunch with all of the ingredients. Interesting new dishes are bound to emerge. Add a bottle of rosé and it will be a fun summer Sunday with friends."
"One of the activities I want to knock off my bucket list this summer in Los Angeles is to visit watering holes and waterfalls around LA. To be able to swim in the cool water after a hike just sounds far too refreshing. I would also like to visit all of the Case Study Houses in the area. Seeing the architecture is very inspiring for me, plus it is one of my favorite eras. Lastly, I want to spend some time at LACMA, get refreshed on my artist side, and start fall fresh."
"The avocado sandwich at The Trails Cafe is one of my all-time favorites. Griffith Park’s hiking trails start right across the street, so if you go in the morning before it gets too hot and hike up to the observatory [you’ll enjoy] an amazing view—to the sea on a good day. High on my list as well is going to a Cinespia screening in the cemetery and watching a movie under the stars with food and wine and a bunch of other Angelenos. Oh, and biking down the LA River, going to a Dodger game, and a show at the Hollywood Bowl. My list could go on and on—I love LA!"
"I would love to ride my bike to concerts at the Santa Monica Pier. I usually go to one every year. There are too many people there nowadays, but it always reminds me of how much I love my city."
