We caught up with funny guy Ryan Hansen about starring in his new show, why he was intimidated to work with his co-star, and where he loves to take his family in LA.
Life is all about having fun if you’re Ryan Hansen. As a Southern California native, he knows Hollywood better than anyone else having been in various hit films and most notably for playing laidback surfer Dick Casablancas on the hit show, Veronica Mars. For his new YouTube Red show, Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television, he gets the opportunity to poke fun at himself and his career at the expense of his co-star, Samira Wiley, who plays his LAPD partner, Jessica Mathers, in this cop comedy, premiering on October 25.
You obviously play this guy named Ryan Hansen, you’ve played him before, so what’s it like playing this Ryan Hansen for the show. Ryan Hansen: Well, let me just say it’s a dream come true to be able to play Ryan Hansen again. I play a cartoon version of myself. I get to be super over the top, wacky, and fun, and I love that. So, it’s pretty cool.
The show seems part reality, yet part fiction, correct? RH: Well, the murders are fake. Those are not real dead bodies. Those are actors. It’s all based on truth. I’ve been in this business for a long time and I get this opportunity to play myself. It’s as much about Hollywood and my career as it is an action-comedy-cop show.
Did you have any hesitations of doing this kind of show because it is a bit different? RH: I’ve worked with [Rawson Marshall Thurber] before and he has such a good track record. He pitched me this idea and at first I thought it was kind of insane. He’s such a brilliant dude, and so talented, so I was in very good hands with Beau Bauman and his crew. But yea, for sure, [I was] a little hesitant when I first read it because it’s so whacky.
What was it like partnering up with Samira Wiley? RH: She’s the greatest. She’s a Julliard trained actress on these Emmy award-winning shows and she’s such a bad ass so I’m like, oh boy, this could go either way. She could think I’m a total idiot in a bad way or she could think I’m a total idiot in a good way—and thankfully she thought I was an idiot in a good way.
Tell me some of the fun places you like to go to in LA. RH: A lot of our favorite places are in downtown, in the Arts District. We go to Wurstkuche. There are so many good places in Grand Central Market like Eggslut. But really, if I’m being honest, we love Islands. It’s just so easy.
Wait, the burger joint? RH: Yes, the giant booths and you don’t have to be cool all the time. Sometimes you can go to Islands and get a giant beer and have a giant booth.
