Thanks to the flood of new superfood-stocked restaurants and meal delivery services, it just got a little bit easier to get an amazing beach body this season. So whether you’re embarking on a summer diet or just want to swap your mid-day panini for something lighter, be sure to check out some of these ultra-clean lunch options.
This rapidly expanding wellness café biz is primarily known for its inventive yet highly functional organic juices and smoothies—recently, it introduced new blends for fertility and pregnancy—but each location also stocks a variety of fresh grab-and-go (super)food options. Our favorites of late include the kelp noodle Pad Thai and roasted beet and citrus salad. Don't forget to grab one of their killer vegan/gluten-free fudge brownies for dessert. Multiple locations: Brentwood, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Del Mar.
This East coast farm-to-table fave is hitting LA in a big way with a new shop in Mid-City and another one on its way in Santa Monica. Its menu of organic soups, salads, and grain bowls is made from locally-sourced ingredients. Hero dishes from the summer menu include the Rad Thai shrimp salad and the vegan Wild Child bowl, which pair perfectly with freshly-made frescas and naturally-flavored iced teas. 8055 W. Third St., LA, 323-934-3404
When NYC’s time-starved fashion A-listers need to hit reset on their eating habits, they turn to Sakara Life, a gluten-free, plant-based food delivery service that just expanded its operations to LA. Sign up for a week or month at two or three meals a day, or opt for just lunch or dinner delivery—either way, you’ll be privy to can’t-believe-they’re-good-for-you dishes like a red beet burger, soba noodle bowl, or vegan cobb salad (complete with coconut “bacon”).
Next time a sushi craving hits, head to this new Hawaiian-Japanese eatery. First, choose from a base of bamboo-infused rice, kelp noodle, and cucumber slaw, or citrus-kale salad. Then, top it with your choice of raw fish, tofu, or veggies and a variety of seasonings and sauces (we’re partial to the Sriracha ponzu). Don't leave without trying the highly addictive matcha popcorn. 829 Broadway, Santa Monica, 310-395-1097
The smoothies at this all-organic Santa Monica café are like meals in themselves—for instance, the $20 “Hivemaster” includes everything from berries and greens to bee pollen and chia seeds. But if you’re in the mood for something chewable, they’ve also got vegan burritos, acai bowls, sandwiches, and bone broth, as well as a seriously impressive selection of kombucha “cocktails,” in which the fermented tea is blended with fruit/vegetable juices. 606 Broadway, Santa Monica, 310-899-6289
On those days when 4 p.m. hits and you realize you haven’t left your desk, there’s Munchery, a chef-driven food delivery service that recently launched in LA. The app will tell you what seasonal dishes the team of local chefs (alumni of Providence, Craft, and others) have cooked up for that day: think Posole Roja with slow-cooked pork and red chilies or cauliflower steaks with Chimichurri sauce. Everything comes pre-cooked and chilled, so you can order all of your meals for the week at once. The best part? For every meal you buy, Munchery makes a donation to the LA Regional Food Bank.
For this ethical and sustainable restaurant group’s newest location, French-born executive chef Daniel Schaffhauser looked to his home country for inspiration, turning out bistro-style fare such as duck confit kale salad and market fish atop a bed of greens, picholine olives, and lemon confit (both of which can only be found at this location). Much of the veggies will be grown exclusively for the restaurant in Downtown LA, powered by Green City Farms’ drought-friendly Aeroponic tower gardening technology. 145 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale, 818-459-4850
