With juice bars and fitness studios on every corner, it’s safe to say LA has wholeheartedly embraced the wellness movement. But with so many trends out there, jumping on the be-your-best-self bandwagon can be overwhelming. Enter LA-based LEAFtv founders Geri Hirsch and Erin Falconer who recently debuted their Year of Wellness, a monthly subscription-based box filled with luxury wellness-focused goodies complete with instructions on how to detox, heal, and overall live a happier and healthier life. To get a little taste of what to expect, Hirsch and Falconer spilled a few of their wellness secrets below.
What’s an easy way to detox?
GERI HIRSCH: Dare I say logging off all social media? It's truly an excellent way to detox from comparison, comments, and all the noise.
ERIN FALCONER: The fastest way to detox, in the quickest amount of time, for me, is always water. It flushes out your system and keeps you looking fresh, young, and alive! My favorite water app is Water Minder, which reminds you to stay hydrated all day long and tallies your daily intake.
What’s the best way to nourish yourself?
GH: Healthy indulgences like a massage, a manicure, skin brushing, warm tea, some soothing music, long baths, dark chocolate, and anything else that brings great happiness.
EF: For me, things that are nourishing are often very warm. I absolutely love soups and I take a hot bath every night—literally. When I feel warm inside, I feel totally nourished. I also love a good book—total nourishment for the mind and my creativity.
What’s your secret for a healthy glow?
GH: Happy girls are the prettiest so it's important to de-stress, have fun, and of course, healthy food choices help. I try to maintain a lifestyle of clean good fats (salmon, avocado), antioxidants (blueberries, green tea) and loads of greens (many of which I grow myself in our organic garden).
EF: A lot of water, my Clarisonic once a week, a great face serum, and my LED Red Light Therapy at-home mask. I look like Darth Vader for 20 minutes three times a week, but the results are worth it. Finally, bone broth three times a week. I don’t eat meat, so this is a great way to get a little animal protein and a whole bunch of collagen. Plus it’s very nourishing!
What do you do when you need a quick energy boost?
GH: Jumping jacks! Getting the blood flowing immediately makes me feel better.
EF: A 4-minute plank. They say if you can do an elbow plank for four straight minutes, you are in great shape. My record is 3:15 on a good day. Every afternoon, when I’m feeling a crash coming, I jump onto all fours and give it a whirl. Not only does it work my entire body and get my endorphins firing, it’s a great mental challenge. Plus, it provides a lot of LOLs for the office.
What are some of your favorite clean beauty products?
GH: I love Kosås lipsticks (rosewater is my favorite), Dr. Bronner’s organic soaps, Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum, OSEA’s Red Algae Mask, Cora organic tampons (which are in month three of the Year of Wellness box!), Moon Juice Beauty Dust, and lately I've been using Aura Cacia Organic Rosehip Oil all over my body in lieu of moisturizer.
EF: Discovering great, new clean beauty products literally gives me life! I’m super impressed by the leaps and bounds this burgeoning industry has made in a relatively short period of time. My go-to faves right now [include] Skinceutical’s Ferulic CE Vitamin Serum (This product singlehandedly changed my skin. If I could only have one fancy serum, this would be it.) Hannes Dóttir’s Icelandic Sea Masque is the newest addition to my skin care routine and it’s incredible. Literally a face game-changer and the whole experience is so sensorial and relaxing, it’s a mini-spa in a bottle. Andalou Naturals 1000 Roses Cleansing Foam. Nothing smells better and for the price, IMO, it can’t be beat. Själ Cela Intuitif Cellular Brightening & Renewal Crème—it is simply the nicest feeling cream I have ever put on my face. Herbivore Botanical’s Pink Clay Soap is just such a simple, beautiful bar. It’s often the most uncomplicated of products that work the best, and this falls right in that category. Kayo Better Body Care Crème. I absolutely love this combo after dry-skin brushing and a hot, epsom salt bath!
What ritual should everyone add to their morning routine and why?
GH: Set your intentions—[planning] how you want to live, feel, and be. It’s sort of like a goal, but without a fixed outcome or something to check off a list. It’s an aim towards how you want to live your life. I like to set my intentions every morning while in the shower and everyday they're different depending on what is going on in my life. I like to think of this time as a daily meeting with a life coach only the life coach is me and I pump myself up. Remember: you are the only one in control of your thoughts. I've done this every day since I was 10 years old and it's something that has served me well.
EF: The way you start your morning really defines how the rest of your day is going to go. Incorporating a 20-minute meditation into my morning has changed everything for me. I feel so calm, focused, energized, and positive after 20 minutes of concentrated calm, and these benefits are with me throughout the day. Not only does it allow you to set your intentions, but it allows you to start your morning with the idea that you are important and worth taking the time. I’m classically trained in the Transendental Method of meditation, but love the One Giant Mind meditation app as a daily practice.
What should be in everyone’s kitchen?
GH: In the fridge: spinach, kale, blueberries, salmon, eggs, flaxseed oil, acai powder, and bee pollen. In the pantry: nuts, coconut oil, chia seeds, maca, and manuka honey.
EF: I love Philosophie Mama’s Green Dream (amazing veggie protein and fiber), chia seeds (another great source of fiber), cacao nibs (delicious and a super antioxidant), and camu camu powder. (I prefer this to acai. It balances your mood.) I add these to soups or smoothies to infinitely multiply the health benefits. And I pretend McConnell’s Ice Cream is healthy by sprinkling cacao nibs on top. Finally, I take a probiotic supplement every morning that my stomach swears by.
