“Alexis has the ability to both inspire and comfort girls,” says actress Kristen Bell who’s starring in next week’s Veronica Mars feature film. “Her message is all about acceptance and supporting what makes us individuals. I’m lucky enough to have Alexis as a dependable friend and mentor in my life, but for all those out there who don't, this book can serve as their ‘pocket Alexis.’”
Jones’ women-empowering movement began when she co-founded I AM THAT GIRL, which strives to inspire women and girls to be their best selves and turn “self-doubt into self-love.” Through her words, Jones has inspired many women around the country and in the process empowered herself. “When I’m selflessly pouring into girls and loving them back to life, I’m simultaneously doing it for myself as well,” she says. Her book, she adds, delivers one main message: “reminding girls that they are inherently badass.”
Whatever struggles and challenges women may face, Jones encourages them to listen to their own wants, needs, and desires, and to honor them. “The reality is that we can’t go on to be the future female leaders our world needs, we can’t invent, create, dream, inspire, challenge the status quo, or be exquisitely rebellious when our gas tank isn’t full and we’re the only ones who can fill it,” she says.
Knowing that women are not alone in their struggles is what Jones finds the most comforting, and she advises them to lean on each other for support. “Women need women,” she says. “It’s in our DNA to build community and we just forgot along the way that we’re actually on the same team and we can do exponentially more together than we could ever imagine doing alone.”
