With autumn officially here, we asked six of LA’s most stylish tastemakers to share their tips and tricks for transitioning their wardrobes from summer to fall.
"You don't have to box away your summer dresses at the first sign of cool weather. Layer them with a jean jacket or an oversized sweater topped with a leather jacket as the days get colder. Or, go for a jumpsuit if you're worried about your legs getting cold."
"First, it’s all about layering. The weather in LA fluctuates, so you can easily pile on or peel off accordingly. Throw on a cape, moto jacket, or coat over a slip dress and pair slit skirts with boots. Everyone needs a good felt hat and scarf as well. Lastly, invest in closed-toe boots and heels.”
“Regardless of the season, I focus on wardrobe staples for a clean, versatile look. I’m always traveling so keeping it simple lets me go straight from the plane to press meetings. I have a collection of Rails t-shirts in all shades and colors and I layer in our light and dark vintage denim button-downs. Our plaids always transcend seasons and can be worn year-round. I like to add a tailored jacket for a sharp daytime look that can also keep you warm on a crisp fall night.”
"We are lucky in Los Angeles because it is spring all year-round with periods of hot summer and a quarter of fall. I get asked all the time from guys how to create a uniform. The advice that I live by is to pick a three-color palette. That way, everything can always work with each other. My uniform goes from navy blue, shades of gray, and black all year long. I like to add pieces that are different fabrics and shades of my core colors and textures to revive my wardrobe. Brands I lean on for fall are Officine Generale, Outerknown, Alex Mill, and Creep by Hiroshi Awai."
“With the current LA weather, it is hard to believe we will ever fully transition out of summer looks, but I am definitely looking forward to the cooler weather, so I can whip out some of my fall favorites. Right now, I am loving the ripped jeans look and I usually pick those up from Topshop. With that, I absolutely live for a good pair of Chelsea boots in either muted suede or ones with some great leather finishes. To top it all off, it’s never out of season in LA to wear sunglasses. Check out two great styles from my new line of sunglasses, Quay x Amanda Steele. The Envy pair in either black or nude would go well with this fall outfit.”
“Lucky for us Angelenos, our summer to fall transition isn't too drastic. The secret is layering leather or thick shorts with fleece-lined leggings like these by Anthropologie to keep you sleek, slim, and super warm. Who said florals are for summer? I still take a Yumi Kim summer dress like this, add a black turtleneck cable sweater under or on top, leggings, or skinny jeans beneath (it's a maxi dress, which means your secret is safe to the max!), a suede over-the-knee boot, and a hot Karen Millen trench left open or tied to get the peekaboo floral effect. Layering provides endless styling options.”
