How Alessandra Ambrosio Gets in Shape for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

We sat down with Victoria’s Secret Angel Alessandra Ambrosio to find out what to expect in this year’s runway show (airing Tuesday, December 8 on CBS), how she gets in shape before the big day, and why she channeled a porcupine at a recent ‘wings’ fitting.
This is your fifteenth year [on the show]. What has made this one so much more special? Alessandra Ambrosio: Every year it gets bigger and better—the wings get crazier. This year we had The Weeknd, Selena Gomez, and Ellie Goulding, and it was just amazing. They added 10 angels this year, so it’s really cute to have all those new girls [who are] super excited doing their first or second show. I’ve been doing this for a long time, but it always feels like the first time. Moments before we get on the runway, you have that feeling—it’s like, you get so nervous.
How do you handle those nerves? AA: You just breath and then you just enjoy [yourself]. You have fun, you listen to the music, walk, and do your thing.
How do you prepare for the show? AA: I work out throughout the year. I do a lot of yoga, and mild exercises like barre classes and yoga. Sometimes I’ll do pilates, go for a walk, hike. The week before the show, I definitely don’t eat any carbs or sugar. It’s that one week that I’ll give up all the delicious food that I like to eat because of the show.
This year, you work with VS newbies Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. What was that like? AA: They’re [both] super sweet and professional. Kendall—I’ve been working with her for a few years and she’s a sweetheart. Gigi opened every show this season. She knows what she’s doing. I thought they were perfect for the brand because they have everything that a bombshell needs to have for the [VS] runway.
This show keeps getting bigger and better every year. What makes it so unique? AA: It’s the only brand that actually does something like this. It airs all over the world in more than 180 countries. We’re creating a fantasy and that’s what we’re showing to people.
Was there ever a moment so funny that you had to pause and pull yourself together? AA: This year, I had these wings for my second look. They looked like a porcupine kind of thing behind me. I was at the fitting, and was on all fours walking [around] like a little animal. We were just cracking up because they didn’t expect that. These are supposed to be beautiful angel wings and I look like a little creature. It was pretty funny.
