Before you sit down to watch this year's Golden Globes, hedge your bets with our category guide featuring predictions from movie buff and critic Steven Panzarella, who gave us his take on this year's most hotly contested film categories.
Guillermo del Toro is nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes this year.
Nominees: Martin McDonagh, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro.
"It’s hard to address this category without addressing the snubs but that aside It’ll be hard for them to resist Nolan or Scott or Spielberg here as veterans of the category, but they will actually get this one right. Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water is a beautifully directed movie and one of the best films of the year."
Critic's Pick: Guillermo del Toro
Best Actress: Musical or Comedy
Nominees: Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan, Emma Stone
"It is going to be a very good night at the golden globes for Lady Bird and that night will be highlighted in large part by a win for Saoirse Ronan. Ronan gives a perfect performance as a strong willed teenage girl trying to get out of her home town along with sometimes tumultuous relationship with her stronger willed mother. Lady Bird is pretty close to the best movie of 2017 and arguably a front runner in every category it’s nominated in."
"Starting this off by stating that I loved Frances McDormand in Three Billboards, She is electric and gives one of the fiercest performances I’ve watched in years. That being said, I also loved Sally Hawkins who gives one of the bravest performances of the year as a mute women who falls in love with a creature from the black lagoon. I loved both of these performances so much and yet, you have the fact that Meryl Streep is always a contender when she is present in a category which makes this prediction harder."
Critic's Pick: Meryl Streep (The Post)
Best Actor: Comedy or Musical
Nominees: Steve Carrell, Ansel Elgort, James Franco, Hugh Jackman, Daniel Kaluuya
"Now this is an awesome category. Baby Driver was the best time I had at the movies this year and I’m glad to see Elgort here. I am also ecstatic to see Daniel Kaluuya here for what I thought was a perfect movie in Get Out. All that being said, what James Franco does as the enigmatic director of the worst best movie of all time is truly incredible and voters will agree."
Critic's Pick: James Franco (The Disaster Artist)
Best Actor: Drama
Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.
Nominees: Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Hanks, Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington.
"The main question here is will the voters be able to resist the final performance of Daniel Day Lewis? After that will they be able to resist a juicy, scenery chewing, performance from Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour? The answer to that question is no, they will not. Oldman as Winston Churchill was inspiring and he gives flat out one of the best performances of the year and the best of his career."
Critic's Pick: Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour)
Best Picture: Comedy or Musical
Nominees:The Disaster Artist, Get Out, The Greatest Showman, I, Tonya, Lady Bird
"This category was created to make sure comedy and musicals got their time to shine and it almost every year has at least one movie that raises eyebrows. It’s not that Get Out wasn’t very funny, because it was but it was also a horror movie about race. So it’s hard to place it in one category. I’m glad it’s in this category but I think Lady Bird is one of the best movies of the year and I think it’s an easy pick to win here."
Critic's Pick:Lady Bird
Best Picture: Drama
The premiere of Fox Searchlight Pictures' 'The Shape of Water'.
Nominees: Dunkirk, The Post, The Shape of Water, Call Me by Your Name, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
"This is a three-horse race at the moment for me, the HFPA loves movies like Dunkirk and again they love to be the contrarian so will the pick Call Me by Your Name after handing out awards in other categories to The Shape of Water? I think The Shape of Water will have some competition at the Oscars and HFPA will hand it it’s big win of the year by making it the best picture."
