The Handmaid's Tale breakout star Sydney Sweeney keeps making big visions come true.
Sydney Sweeney proved early on the power of incepting her dreams. As a 12-year-old in Spokane, Wash., and an eye on a career, she craved an audition for a film shooting on location there. Her nonshowbiz-y parents weren’t sure, but she came up with a novel way of convincing them: “I created a five-year business plan that basically explained what could happen in my life if they let me do this, the steps I had to take, things I had to work toward,” recalls the 21-year-old. “They were like, ‘OK, maybe she’s a little serious about this!’ They let me audition for it, and I ended up booking it.”
That plan proved effective long term. Sweeney recently turned heads on TV appearing in Everything Sucks!, Sharp Objects and her initially hated then heartbreaking stint as Eden on The Handmaid’s Tale. “I was a fan girl, and I was freaking out because of how big the show was,” Sweeney says. “I thought ‘I have so much weight on my shoulders right now—I better pull this off!’”
Sweeney did, and then some. She next co-stars opposite Zendaya on HBO’s upcoming drama Euphoria and nabbed a top-secret role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. “I still can’t believe I’m on a first-name basis with the [actors] I’m on first-name basis with now,” she says. “A couple months ago, I had an interview and they asked, ‘Who’s someone you’d love to do a project with?’ I named Leo and Brad, and literally a couple months later, I’m in a movie with them. Wow.”
