Spaghetti Con Polpette at Portofino-Cucina-Italiana
Although it won't be served at the event, the spaghetti con polpette is a good example of Portofino's offerings.

Portofino Cucina Italiana will host wine specialist, Carlo Marino, and wine educator, Dr. Joel Fisher, at their Downtown restaurant next Wednesday (March 13, 6:30 p.m.) for an exclusive dinner with wine pairings. The event kicks off with a welcome reception, followed by a four-course dinner by executive chef Diego Ortoli.

A butternut squash soup topped with goat cheese and pistachio oil kicks off the courses, served alongside a crisp Sardinian white Vermentino with citrus and floral notes. The pasta course comprises a rigatoni amatriciana that combines pork cheek, caramelized onions, and fresh tomatoes with white wine and chili flakes. Meanwhile, the steak course calls out to the north of Italy with a bistecca alla fiorentina, a traditional Florentine bone-in ribeye, marinated with garlic and herbs and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. Accompanying wines include a Sella Mosca Cannonau Riserva 2008 that was aged to perfection in oak barrels for the pasta, and a full-bodied Tre Rose Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2009 to complement the steak. For dessert, guests will enjoy mini cannolis paired with a sweet Moscato D’Asti. A vegetarian alternative menu is also available by request.

Tickets for the evening are $80 per guest, which includes the meal and wine tastings. Reservations can be made online at 464 S. Main St., Downtown LA, 213-239-9019
