Amid taking in Oscar hopefuls like Lincoln and Les Misérables, celebrate indie contributions to film this week at the 9th Annual Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival, held at the New Beverly Cinema and Bellevarado Studios. The festival runs from December 3 to December 12, with the awards ceremony for best picture taking place on December 5 at 6 PM. Full festival passes are still available, as are tickets to individual screenings.
This year’s selection is an intriguing mix of features, documentaries, and shorts from up-and-coming filmmakers. One premiere to note is Bryce Dallas Howard’s When You Find Me (December 5, 2 PM), a heart-wrenching family drama marking the directorial debut for the actress. Film aficionados will also want to pencil in Uwe Boll’s Bailout: The Age of Greed (December 3, 7:30 PM), which features a post-screening Q&A with cast members Dominic Purcell, Edward Furlong, and Eric Roberts, as well as Boll.
Meanwhile, the festival will honor one of film’s great avant-garde leaders, Tinto Brass, with a retrospective including screenings of extended and restored versions of his films, documentaries surrounding his work, and a Q&A with Brass himself. Don’t miss the classic films La Vacanza (December 3, 3 PM) and Dropout (December 4, 7:30 PM), starring Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero, which haven’t been shown in U.S. theaters for 30 years.
