In making her new documentary, Great Directors, director Angela Ismailos set out to discover what characterizes great behind-the-camera talent by placing them in front of the lens. Starring such directors as Bernardo Bertolucci, Catherine Breillat and Ken Loach, Great Directors celebrates film and its creators. Ismailos, who produced, directed and wrote the film, lards it with unique clips and historical archives from her subjects’ own work. In addition to focusing on the respective careers of the 10 men and women she profiles, Ismailos tackles subjects like politics, history, human emotion and artistic evolution. “The film is an homage to my upbringing, coming from a family of film lovers,” says Ismailos, whose favorite directors include Bertolucci, Agnès Varda and Ingmar Bergman. “It’s an intimate cinematic journey, but a very subjective one.” Great Directors opens in LA July 9.
We go behind the scenes with James Marsden, and ask him about the shoot, living in LA, and what's next.
