SHAWN KELLY
MANAGER, BURTON SNOWBOARDS & CHANNEL ISLANDS SURFBOARDS LA FLAGSHIP
LOS ANGELES CONFIDENTIAL: What’s new this season at Burton?
SHAWN KELLY: The Liquid Lounger, which is a backpack with a built-in cooler, shot glasses and cards inside. The Sleeper hoodie is also big for us. It comes with armpit zips, earplugs, big pockets, a blow-up pillow that goes around the neck and a mask to cover your face. It’s the perfect kit for sleeping on planes.
LAC: What Burton items should our readers covet this season?
SK: We have a collaboration with Paul Smith that is extremely limited in quantity. He designed jackets, pants, first-layer sweaters and hoodies. It’s fashion forward and progressive, which makes it great for the street or for snowboarding.
LAC: What type of jacket would you suggest for a boarder who frequents the slopes near LA?
SK: For somebody who’s going local, I would suggest a lighterweight shell. That way you can adjust the layer underneath to be prepared for a stormy winter day or a warmer spring day.
LAC: Tell us about your phenomenal store on Melrose.
SK: We have everything you could possibly need for surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding. And we have a really big halfpipe set up on the roof. Shaun White is always up there. 8175 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, 323-370-1777; burton.com

T’IEN CHESHIER
MANAGER, CAROLINA HERRERA

LEFT: T'ien Cheshier; RIGHT: inside the Melrose Place store
LOS ANGELES CONFIDENTIAL: Where did Carolina Herrera draw inspiration for her spring 2010 line from?
T’IEN CHESHIER: The rope print and the texture of the fabric, along with the accessories, were developed from patterns found within woven baskets. The colors Carolina used were taken from different shades of a sunset—amber, rose, quartz and caramel, all of which have a beautiful, luminous quality.
LAC: What do you think makes Carolina Herrera’s clothes appropriate for women of all ages?
TC: Everything is made with attention to detail and proportion. Her designs never feel trendy or overdone; they’re effortlessly chic and feminine. Her pieces are not only beautiful now, they’ll be beautiful years from now.
LAC: If readers were to buy only one new piece for the holiday season, what would you suggest?
TC: We always have fantastic cocktail dresses that make perfect party dresses. We actually have a gorgeous almond coupé organza off-theshoulder dress that travels effortlessly from day to evening. It’s perfect for the lifestyle in LA. 8441 Melrose Pl., Los Angeles, 323-782-9090; carolinaherrera.com
