Patti Stanger's Rules for Dating and Dining

It’s an impossibly perfect Malibu afternoon at Nobu, and Patti Stanger is more than ready to relax with a Lemon Chia Fizz libation and a table full of treats—from artichoke salad to scallop truffle chips to Malibu “Takumi” burgers. But before she can indulge, Stanger is interrupted by a friendly face: Suze Orman, a fellow former Oprah Winfrey Show guest with whom she’d appeared on The Wendy Williams Show just one month earlier.

Though star encounters are commonplace at this oceanside Japanese hot spot, this one is particularly fitting—after all, Orman makes millionaires and Stanger helps them find love. It’s all part of Stanger’s job as the brazen star of Bravo’s The Millionaire Matchmaker and the founder of millionairesclub123.com, an exclusive Marina del Rey–based matchmaking service that helps the wealthy snag their soul mates. Since founding the club more than 13 years ago, Stanger has seen it all—and she’ll happily dish about it over Nobu nibbles.

On the show, you espouse old-fashioned values like the man picking up the tab. At what point in the relationship should a couple go to dinner?
PATTI STANGER: If a man has money, he should take you to dinner on the first date. My philosophy is if you do coffee, you’re cheap; if you do lunch, it’s an interview; if you do drinks, you’re auditioning; and if you do dinner, it’s romance.

When coaching clients, what are your top tips on what to order?
PS: Guys like hearty food, girls like lighter fare. Seafood and sushi are wonderful because they’re light; you can’t really gorge on big pastas and heavy items like risotto until you’re in a relationship. I also wouldn’t order lobster unless the gentleman invites you to order whatever you want. As for cocktails, I believe in a two-drink maximum. Nothing good can happen after a third drink! However, I do love Rosa Regale sparkling wine, as well as espresso martinis—the only pick-me-up you’ll ever need. I’m also a big believer in mint mojitos; they make your breath taste fresher.

Do you have any tried-and-true aphrodisiac recommendations?
PS: I totally believe in seafood—salmon, oysters, and tuna all have aphrodisiac properties. That’s why I love it here. I also love sake because [most are] gluten-free and don’t have sulfites. They say pomegranate is also an aphrodisiac.

What are some of your favorite spots for LA singles to mix and mingle?
PS: LA is a rough town. It’s so spread out. You have to decide whether you want the surfer dude from Manhattan Beach or the artsy dude from Los Feliz. Manhattan Beach is filled with men—that town is cranking swinging singles. It’s full of really expensive restaurants like The Strand House and Shade. Fonz’s is a really great hangout; all the guys go to the bar and drink beers, then the girls come in, and they’ll all move over to get steaks. I’ve met tons of guys just sitting at a table with my girlfriends.

Private clubs like 41 Ocean and Soho House are gaining ground here in town. Are your millionaires part of that scene?
PS: I’m actually talking to partners and investors right now about building a Millionaire’s Club, which would be half-private and half-regular. It would encompass three levels: restaurant/bar/ hotel. In Florida, we have these dessert bars where you play backgammon and listen to great music, and you actually can hear yourself talk. [Here in LA], there is no place like that. I don’t need to hear techno music blaring in my ears. I want a quiet place that is upscale and caters to the 35-plus crowd. Got some pennies in your pocket? Want a nice place to lay back and lounge? That’s going to be my spot.

You met your boyfriend, David Krause, on the website POF (Plenty of Fish). What’s been your most memorable date in LA so far?
PS: Probably The Getty, where we went on our second date. He didn’t know who I was [yet], and everyone kept coming up for an autograph. We got really lit on boxed wine, and when we went inside, we went to the Arbus exhibit because we’re both really into photography; I was obsessed with Diane Arbus as a teenager. We made out right by Anderson Cooper’s [baby] photo!

What is the most lavish date you’ve seen your millionaires spring for?
PS: A big producer took someone to the Academy Awards on a first date. His movie was nominated, and he called me at 7 AM because his date had cancelled. I told him, “I know the perfect girl, but she doesn’t have a dress.” He said, “I’m taking care of it,” and Gucci brought a dress over—next thing I know, she was on the red carpet.

Do you believe the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?
PS: One hundred percent. I’m actually writing a book called Mancatcher Meals, but it’s taking a while for me to perfect all of the recipes. [David and I] cook together all the time. We’re always in the kitchen.

Since founding the club in 2000, you’ve branched out so much—but it all comes back to matchmaking.
PS: I will never stop matchmaking, and I’ll still be doing it when I’m rich and old and gray. When I’m on my deathbed, I’ll be like, “You, doctor, over here! You need to meet the nurse.” That’s going to be me.

Shutters on the Beach’s fine-dining establishment, One Pico, just received menu makeovers from By the Blue Sea’s restaurant group managing chef, Sven Mede. The restyled offerings reflect Mede’s commitment to seasonal, farmer’s market cuisine, and will continue to be updated in accordance with what’s available from local markets.

Served in One Pico’s stunning beachfront dining room, the light, California cuisine reflects the restaurant’s ocean surroundings. Under the market plates section, diners can find a fresh red Russian kale salad featuring toasted almonds and blood orange vinaigrette, or a cucumber gazpacho with avocado, radish, and croutons. Meanwhile, appetizers focus on seafood, such as an organic salmon crudo, grilled Pacific shrimp, and pan-seared calamari. Andrew Meieran Revives Clifton's Cafeteria

“When I first moved here, everyone said, ‘You’ve got to go to Clifton’s… just don’t eat at Clifton’s!” remembers entrepreneur and filmmaker Andrew Meieran, best known for creating The Edison nightclub, a steampunk bacchanal that is still drawing crowds six years after its opening. Meieran is now two years into a $5 million basement-to-rooftop restoration of the iconic Clifton’s Brookdale Cafeteria, a wooded fairyland on Broadway that has been dishing up Jell-o and mac ’n’ cheese since 1935.

The 46-year-old California native first arrived in Downtown LA almost two decades ago, when today’s gourmet markets and weekend bar crawlers were just glimmers in a civic booster’s eye. “It felt like the frontier, the Wild West. It was this weird, abandoned [part of the] city that was waiting desperately for people to rediscover it,” says Meieran. Searching for available real estate meant sidestepping used needles; on one visit to the Rosslyn Hotel with a real estate agent, they even encountered a dead body on the sidewalk. Despite the downsides, Meieran had faith. “People love historical downtowns, love the density of a walking city. I thought, Eventually it will happen.”

“He understands that people want context, continuity, connection,” says Linda Dishman, executive director of the Los Angeles Conservancy, who thinks that Meieran is part of “a group of visionary folks who really understand and appreciate the power of place,” and are essential in reanimating the city’s Downtown.

After acquiring Clifton’s in 2010, Meieran found that the former owners had left behind a treasure: storied original proprietor Clifford Clinton’s diaries. “In his first drawings he had a great big Deco bar in front,” says Meieran, who will be reinstating the feature.

Though much of the beloved Disney-esque cafeteria will remain the same, visitors to the revived Clifton’s will also find an additional two floors of the building reopened, each with its own eatery. One will be called The Pacific Seas (a Polynesian-themed tribute to another of Clinton’s post-WWII properties) and a second, as-yet-unnamed dining option will house Meieran’s own dioramas.

“My bigger thing is broadening the experience and creating a little more of an educationally interactive environment,” says Meieran. He will build on the cafeteria’s existing woodland theme with displays that focus on conservation, but also plans to tap into the rich history of the space. The Berkeley grad is enthusiastic as he spools out one anecdote about the restaurant-bar-cafeteria: Legend has it that the great songwriter Jerry Leiber was inspired by the whistling of a dishwasher at Clifton’s to write tunes like “Jailhouse Rock.”

It’s clear that this is much more than a restaurant to Meieran. “I just hate the thought that history gets erased,” he says. “Civilization should be a summation of the human endeavor.”

Les Voiles de St. Barth

Contestants set sail in the fourth edition of Caribbean yacht racing competition Les Voiles de St. Barth from April 8-13, 2013 in Saint Barthélemy, French West Indies. But in lieu of a medal, some 800 sailors from around the world braved a challenging sailing course in windy weather in hopes of taking home a bright yellow, water-resilient Richard Mille RM 028 Automatic Dive Watch "Les Voiles de St. Barth" ($93,000).

Jane Gottlieb's 'Dreamscapes' at UCLA

The UCLA Anderson School of Management will host a private opening reception tonight (May 15) for alumna artist Jane Gottlieb, whose “Dreamscapes” collection will be displayed within the school’s Entrepreneurs Hall for the next ten years. The exhibition comprises 25 pieces featuring Gottlieb’s signature technique of hand-painting dyes onto large-scale cibachrome photographs. The result is a colorful kaleidoscope of dream cars, scenic vistas, and everyday life, transformed by the artist’s hand into vibrant conversation pieces.

Gottlieb, who says UCLA is the place that really inspired her dream of becoming an artist, has long been immersed in the California creative scene. After graduating from UCLA in 1968 with a degree in painting and art history, she worked as an art director for Warner Brothers where she oversaw classic films like Klute and THX-1138. Q&A: Fitz and the Tantrums' Noelle Scaggs

Fitz and the Tantrums just released their second album, More Than Just A Dream.

Fitz and the Tantrums is an LA band through and through: they came together in the city in 2008, debuted at Hollywood’s Hotel Café, and played their early shows at venues like Spaceland and the Viper Room. While the band has since earned national acclaim—thanks to their unique indie pop sound and a tour with Maroon 5—they still call Los Angeles home.

With their second album, More Than Just A Dream, released May 7 from Electra records to much acclaim, we were lucky enough to get the chance to chat with vocalist Noelle Scaggs about their latest project and LA music.

What’s special about the music scene in Los Angeles?
NOELLE SCAGGS: There are a ton of places for bands to perform that aren’t just for arena-selling artists. For instance, we have places like the Hotel Café (1623 N. Cahuenga Blvd., Hollywood, 323-461-2040) that really cater to independent singers/songwriters. We have a handful of venues like The Echo (1822 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park, 213-413-8200), Satellite Bar (1717 Silver Lake Blvd., Silver Lake, 323-661-4380), or Bootleg (2220 Beverly Blvd., Westlake, 213-389-3856) that are great for indie bands on the rise.

Then we have places like the House of Blues (8430 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, 323-848–5100) that are more for traveling acts or the occasional special event, and the midsize historical theaters that book big acts. Bands really tend to take care of one other as far as spreading the word, or adding a band as an opener for their tour that may be smaller in popularity.

What is your favorite LA venue to perform at?
NS: I really enjoy playing at theaters like The Fonda (6126 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, 323-464-0808), The El Rey (5515 Wilshire Blvd., Mid-City West, 323-936-6400), and The Wiltern (3790 Wilshire Blvd., Koreatown, 213-388-1400). These places are really about the music and there is just energy in the history of each space and the artists that have played there—you really feel it when you are on the stage.

What was the inspiration behind the new album?
NS: We wanted to focus on expanding our sound by melding the energy of our live shows into the recorded album. We didn't want to just stick with one formula for our music because we had so many influences that made their appearance on the first album, that are more prominent on this record. I think we have been able to really hone in on the Fitz and the Tantrums sound—the modern meets familiar.

Who are some of your major musical influences?
NS: I grew up with a lot of soul and disco singers like Aretha and Teena Marie, classic hip-hop artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian, Dilated Peoples, and The Roots. I had a period of metal and classic rock that I was into for a long time with artists like Pink Floyd, Tool, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac…I could go on and on.

Back to LA—is there a certain neighborhood here that you identify with?
NS: I love the Eastside of LA. I grew up in South Pasadena so I'm really used to a laid-back, friendly community, a place that you can walk around in. I live in Silver Lake, where there are trees, good places to eat, and little boutiques—and it is pretty central to the rest of the city.

When you’re not playing, where do you like to hang out?
NS: I enjoy the simple things—going to dinner at a new place outside of my neighborhood or just walking around Los Feliz or Silver Lake and visiting the local bars; maybe catching the occasional show.

The Velvet Garden Gets a Refreshed Space

Inside The Velvet Garden’s newly expanded retail space on West 3rd Street.

“I want people who are walking on 3rd to get to see flowers,” says Kimm Birkicht, co-owner and artistic director of couture florist The Velvet Garden, which has occupied its prime West Hollywood space for the past 18 years. Birkicht and her business partner, Diane Munoz, have long sold home goods in the storefront—the back is a fragrant workshop where bouquets for loyal customers like Jennifer Aniston are carefully crafted—but their spring remodel really makes the space bloom.

Situated on a corner, with giant southwest-facing plate-glass windows, the storefront was exposed to too much direct sunlight to display live flowers. With this revamp, The Velvet Garden will install walls that will allow Birkicht to build elaborate floral window displays, a solution inspired by the Iowa native’s first job in Los Angeles, as a window dresser at Neiman Marcus. It was also there that she realized her true calling was flowers, leading her to take an apprenticeship with Neiman’s florist. “I went from top window dresser to sweeping floors and maybe touching an orchid here or there,” she remembers.

The gamble paid off. LA’s beauty-obsessed have made The Velvet Garden one of the city’s go-to petal purveyors. Father-and-son chef duo Pawan and Nakul Mahendro are re-imagining the traditional gastro-pub with Badmaash, a hip new concept that opened for dinner May 13. Situated on 2nd and Main within the historic Higgins Building, the restaurant combines the flavors of Mumbai street food with familiar pub grub to yield a unique menu.

The introductory offerings prove that the Mahendro’s mashups are inventive, without going overboard. Badmaash’s chicken wings are tandoori spiced and served with whipped yogurt instead of sour cream, while the burgers trade beef for lamb, eschewing traditional toppings for mint-cilantro mayo and jicama slaw. But perhaps the most creative combination comes by way of their chicken tikka masala poutine—a twist on the typical late-night plate that features crispy French fries smothered in cheese and gravy, topped with comforting tomato-based chicken tikka masala.

A Venice-based firm, DEX Studio, is responsible for the colorful atmosphere, which combines Indian traditions with Downtown’s chic, industrial vibe. LA Phil Presents The Marriage of Figaro

LA Philharmonic premieres Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s famed opera, The Marriage of Figaro, on May 17 at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with productions continuing May 19, 23, and 25. This is the second installment in a series of three operas that feature collaborations between librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte and Mozart, all of which boast set and costume designs by some of the world’s most renowned architects and fashion designers.

The trilogy began with Don Giovanni in May 2012 with Frank Gehry and Rodarte headlining the design scheme, and will conclude in May of next year with Così fan tutte. Couture designer Azzedine Alaïa and architect Jean Nouvel take the reigns as costume and set designer, respectively, for this piece.

The Marriage of Figaro’s all-star cast includes Christopher Maltman as Count Almaviva, Dorothea Röschmann as the Countess Almaviva, and Edwin Crossley-Mercer as Figaro, with director Christopher Alden and LA Phil conductor Gustovo Dudamel working behind the scenes. But perhaps the most noteworthy thing about The Marriage of Figaro is that it proves that not all operas have to be tearjerkers—unless you laugh until you cry.

This particular production coincides with the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in LA arts initiative, and will feature an in-depth conversation with Nouvel and Alaïa on May 18, at 4 pm. Led by LA Phil President & CEO Deborah Borda, the conversation will take place on the set within Walt Disney Concert Hall, and focus on the associations between art, architecture, and the opera hall. As glamour-loving women know, not every timepiece is serious and conservative. Some are downright whimsical, such as the hit Tondo by Night watches from de Grisogono. Unveiled last year, the collection has just begun to make its way into luxury jewelry stores in the last few months. In addition to being mechanical works of art, these timepieces possess an unusual quality in the luxury watch world that begs them to be worn.

Designed by Fawaz Gruosi, the founder and president of de Grisogono, the Tondo by Night is intended to be a capricious, playful timepiece that stores light during the day and then frees it after the sun goes down. The case is created from a pearly photoluminescent fiberglass composite—with pieces of mother-of-pearl blended into the fiberglass for extra shimmer—then further bedecked with color-coordinated gemstones.

“It has such wide appeal because it is fashionable, hefty, and different from everything else on the market,” Gruosi says. “Still, I never dreamed Tondo by Night would be such an amazing success. The demand is much higher than what I produced, which was extremely unexpected.”

Each Tondo by Night watch is equipped with an exclusive in-house mechanical movement, specially developed to display the gem-set oscillating weight on the front side. Built in collaboration with an outside lab, the Tondo by Night timepieces are offered in an array of colors, each with a row of 48 gemstones on the bezel, plus another 60 on the dial (and a black diamond on the crown). The colors include white with white diamonds, yellow with yellow sapphires, pink with pink sapphires, green with tsavorites, purple with amethysts, and orange with orange sapphires. And three new shades were unveiled at the Baselworld show in April: a vivid green case with a tourmaline bezel, a blue case with a blue sapphire bezel, and a coral case with a spinel bezel. The most expensive watch in the collection is currently the white (diamond) version, which retails for $17,500.

“I dedicate this watch to happy summer days and glamorous nightlife,” Gruosi says. “It’s not only a luxury timepiece but also can be worn as a magnificent jewelry piece, with a twist.”

Mel's Drive-In Marks Milestones

Forty years ago, director George Lucas immortalized Mel’s Drive-In in American Graffiti.

Fifty years ago, if you happened to be stumbling out of a club along the Sunset Strip in the wee hours, and your eardrums were still vibrating from a long night of listening to what would become rock history, and your stomach implored you to add nourishment to your revelry, chances are you might wander a bit east to 8585 Sunset and Ben Frank’s brand new coffee shop—open 24 hours—for a session of comfort-food scarfing and people-gazing.

Today, all Angelenos know the place as a Mel’s Drive-In location, because director George Lucas retrofitted and used the San Francisco location of the chain in his 1973 classic, American Graffiti (the film celebrates its 40th anniversary this year). But back when it was just Ben Frank’s, it was a casual palace of Googie design, built a half century ago by architects Lane and Schlick. The building featured stylistic touches of the future: geometric angles, steel beams, and an altered A-frame roof. It was an audacious establishment run by Arthur Simms, who moved to LA after World War II and operated the MGM commissary for a time.

Luminaries such as Frank Zappa, The Rolling Stones, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, and Phil Spector occupied booths there. It’s rumored that the group Buffalo Springfield was formed in the parking lot. In 1965, a casting call that ran in Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter for performers who would become The Monkees asked for “spirited Ben Frank’s types.” In Ron Jeremy’s autobiography, he mentions signing autographs for Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain there.

The Mel’s chain took over the space in 1997 and changed the vibe to reflect American Graffiti’s sense of nostalgia. The inscrutable countenance of a young Lucas hugging a movie camera and wearing a USC Trojans letterman’s jacket looms large across one wall, along with other stills from the movie. But there are also framed photos of a new era of creatives, like Diddy and Lindsay Lohan. No matter the year or the star wattage, the site itself forever remains a monument to LA’s fast cars, fast food, small talk... and big dreams.

Shamin Momin's List of Art Basel HK Musts

“The Art Basel shows are very selective in their inclusion and that tends to generate a much more thoughtful sensibility within the gallery list,” says Shamim M. Momin, director, cofounder, and curator of the cool, cutting-edge nonprofit Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND). Momin doesn’t just attend the various Basel fairs, she specializes in staging infamous independent exhibitions during the shows, like “The Station” in 2008 and “The Island” in 2010. Below, she describes the strong bonds between Hong Kong and LA suggesting what Angelenos should see and experience this month in Hong Kong.

The LA /Asia connection: “One of the things that interests me about Asia,” says Momin, “is the relationship to ‘new’ markets in the global scheme of things… something I’ve thought a lot about in terms of Los Angeles. Coming from New York and a more Eurocentric spectrum, it has been fascinating to participate in a city (like LA) taking shape and changing the art world. There is something intriguing in terms of directionality going on in Hong Kong right now as well. As a child of immigrant parents—one European, one Asian—I’m guilty of having always thought in a kind of “going East” rotation in the world, which of course privileges Europe first in the trajectory. In LA, there is a historical difference in the relationship to the East—“going West”— meaning Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands—that is far more embedded. It makes perfect sense to me to imagine a solid line from this city to those many in Asia ascending to a place of global prominence within the art world.”

At the show: Momin understands the excitement generated by the launch of Art Basel in Hong Kong due to her experiences at previous Art Basel shows in both Miami and Switzerland. “[They] allow for outside curators to feel comfortable participating in talks [and] onsite sections like Artpublic or other invited elements.” Knowing the overall inclusive feeling at both Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach, Angelenos attending the initial Hong Kong show will have a unique opportunity to see and purchase work created by Chinese artists, specifically those not represented by dealers outside the region, which is the basis of Art Basel in Hong Kong’s noteworthy Insights sector.

Around town: Local institutions not to miss include the multitude of international galleries that have sprung up in recent years as well as the new Asia Society Hong Kong Center, located in a (huge) former British Army explosives compound, and the ambitious Para Site, a (tiny) hip nonprofit organization dedicated to exhibiting international art. Of truly epic proportions is “Mobile M+: Inflation!,” the largest contemporary art exhibition to date in Hong Kong, at the West Kowloon Cultural District site, featuring inflatable sculptures by artists from South Korea, the US, and China (South Korea’s Choi Jeong Hwa and LA resident Paul McCarthy, for example), presented by Hong Kong’s future M+ museum. “The Asian market is growing and evolving,” Momin adds, “and the new Basel show is the perfect platform in which to discover contemporary art in this region.”

The new menu will be launched with an event hosted by 78Violet’s Aly and AJ Michalka and their mother, Carrie on Sunday, May 12. Event-goers will be the first to try the brunch, which will be available this Sunday and regularly on Sundays afterward from 11:30 am-3:30 pm.

The new offerings feature breakfast favorites with creative Italian twists. For example, the chicken and waffles comprises a breaded chicken Milanese with bacon butter and bourbon maple syrup, while the benedict here is fixed with two fried eggs, smoked pancetta, and fontina fonduta, served over focaccia bread. Other intriguing items include a breakfast pizza with mozzarella, prosciutto cotto, organic eggs, and basil, and a tuna carpaccio with baby frisée, caper berries, and a blood orange vinaigrette.

Though the morning fare skews Italian-fusion, the craft cocktails from mixologist Nikki Martin tend more toward the classics. Try a bellini or aperol spritzer, or indulge in bottomless mimosas made with prosecco and a choice of pear, mango, or pompelmo juices.

Officially opened in January, Aventine offers Hollywood diners an alternative to the red velvet rope establishments in the surrounding area. Guests are met with a cozy atmosphere complete with industrial exposed beams, original brick walls, and scattered antiques from the owners’ families. Comedian Ross Mathews can now add author to his resume.

He may have started off as Ross the Intern on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, but now Ross Mathews is a staple on the LA comedy circuit, with frequent appearances on Chelsea Lately and E! News and his own talk show set to air this fall on E!. Mathews also just released a book on May 7, Man Up! Tales of My Delusional Self-Confidence, which chronicles his journey to the spotlight and takes a hilarious look at how he turned his obsession with Hollywood stars into an asset ($25 on amazon.com).

What inspired you to write Man Up?
ROSS MATHEWS: I've lived a ridiculous life—from growing up in a farm town to being plopped into the center of Hollywood—I couldn't not share my adventures along the way.

What drew you to Los Angeles?
RM: Ever since I was a little kid, I would flip through the magazines and see the stars and say, ‘one day I'll be there!’

Any funny stories from when you first moved here?
RM: When I first moved to LA, I lived in this gross little apartment that was infested with cockroaches [laughs]. But I'm still best friends with all the people I lived with.

Any tips for other small-town folk trying to make it big in LA?
RM: I define Man Up as you are what you are—you have to celebrate what makes you different instead of hating it. So identify what makes you different and use it to make you stand out, which is a hard thing to do in a big city like LA.

How did you break into the business?
RM: I did it in a really unorthodox kind of way. Most people get a headshot and go to auditions. I was sort of in the right place at the right time, and had the right talent that people were looking for.

Which celebrity have you gotten really excited about meeting?
RM: I met Michelle Obama and that was a game changer, because this is the First Lady—she's like living history!

Tell us about your talk show.
RM: It's interactive; I want to bring fans and pop culture together. There are so many shows that tear down pop culture and say ‘isn't that stupid,’ but I love it. I want to create a place where we can celebrate it, so we'll be Skyping people into the audience and we'll be able to ask celebrities questions.

Where can we find your book?
RM: The book is available at Target, so you can see me at the City Target, the one in West Hollywood, and the one in Glendale—I'll probably be shopping there. So go get the book and you'll probably bump into me!

Mixology Masters Steve Livigni, Pablo Moix

Raising the bar: Super-cool cocktailers Pablo Moix (left) and Steve Livigni are opening two venues in Venice this summer.

They’re counted among the architects of the classic cocktail culture that has swept LA in recent years, but the suave and always perfectly coiffed Steve Livigni and his business partner and friend Pablo Moix claim they’re not snobs when it comes to patrons with more pedestrian drink orders. “I think people have the right to drink whatever they want,” says Moix. “If people like drinking vodka, vodka is fine,” Livigni adds. Really? So there’s no craft spirit analogy to the culinary faux pas of asking for ketchup at Animal or a well-done steak at Mélisse? When pushed, they’ll admit to their pet peeves.

“With the amount of talent there is in LA with people who know how to make cocktails, for you to order a flavored vodka ‘something’ is just stupid,” Livigni says. “Why order a poorly made spirit filled with all sorts of [stuff] you’d never, ever put in your body under any other circumstances?” Moix comes clean to “one hang-up: bombs… the Irish Car Bomb, the Jaeger Bomb. They’re just a vehicle to get from sober to drunk as fast as possible,” he says.

Livigni, 33, is originally from LA and now lives in Silver Lake. Moix, 38, is from Queens, New York, the son of immigrant parents who met at a sweatshop “putting buckles on belts.” Together they helped create cocktail menus for two instantly iconic bars in Hollywood, La Descarga and Harvard & Stone, while also consulting on dozens of other projects. They’re owner/operators (along with partners Mario Guddemi and Sal Aurora) of Black Market Liquor Bar in Studio City, and now the masters of the Eastside cocktail scene are coming to the coast, with a double shot of development in Venice.

The new, as-yet-unnamed restaurant will occupy 5,000 square feet at Abbot Kinney and Washington, and will feature the team from Black Market Liquor Bar but will include a rustic Italian menu instead.

The second concept is a side project—literally: a 25-person bar called Old Lightning, adjacent to the restaurant. There, the duo will offer their oeuvre of whiskey- and tequila-heavy cocktail creations they have become famous for, although the drinks menu will feature many different types of spirits. What will be unique at Old Lightning, however, is the opportunity to experience what the two call “The Taste,” by sampling from their extensive personal collections of vintage, collectible, and out-of-production bottles. “Some of the stuff, not to get too geeky about it, is sort of priceless,” Livigni says. “There might be only 50 bottles in the world.”

Their new venture will be serving masterfully mixed cocktails until 2 am, something they say is rare in the area, where most drink menus that matter are chef-driven and served in restaurants that close by 11 pm. “People drink differently at 6 pm than they do at 1:30 am,” Livigni says. “You’re not going to a four-hour dinner and having four Manhattans. We’re looking forward to showing the Westside some 1:30 drinking.”

Studying under legendary French designer Christian Dior before launching his eponymous label, Gilbert A. Chagoury inherited a deep appreciation for traditional couture techniques. It follows that exquisite paneling, tailored pleating, and intricate beadwork are just a few of the hallmarks that appear throughout the Los Angeles designer’s garments. “I design for real women, with real curves. The dress has to be worn by everyone from celebrities to real people in the street,” Chagoury explains.

Hoping to bring a true European atelier to Southern California, the designer is unveiling a brand-new boutique this spring, complete with a bespoke service for his most discerning clientele. “My boutique is a unique blend of warm intimacy and free-spiritedness,” Chagoury adds. “My one-on-one consultations are the first step to custom masterpieces tailored to perfection.”

Zac Brown Band highlights the BottleRock Napa Valley musical lineup

Sunny spring weekends call for road trips to wine country, and as if we need an additional tease to jaunt to Napa vineyards, this weekend oenophiles will be toasting incredible live music. The inaugural BottleRock Napa Valley festival held May 9-12. A four-day affair with stellar music, vintners, culinary cache, and comedy.

"This is a festival for music-lovers with a palate," says BottleRock co-founder Bob Vogt. "BottleRock offers festival-goers the best in Napa Valley food, wine, and beer. Where else can you see this many musicians and comedians and have access to shaded areas, seating, and restrooms? [It] has something for everybody.”

First, the musical lineup: Leading bands include The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, The Black Crowes, Jane’s Addiction, Zac Brown Band, The Shins, The Avett Brothers, The Flaming Lips, Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite, Alabama Shakes, and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, among others. With more than 80 bands performing over four days, the musical gamut crosses nearly all genres and will certainly pack a loud punch. Held on three stages over 26 acres of the Napa Valley Expo grounds, the music alone is worth tapping those frequent flier points.

Next, the epicurean extravaganza. On tap at Bottle Rock are more than 50 wineries and artisan brewers, with featured vintners including Silver Oak, Miner Family, Rombauer, St. Supery, Grgich Hills, Beaulieu Vineyard, and Hahn Family Wines, to name a few. Acclaimed chef and restaurateur Cindy Pawlcyn will helm the festival’s culinary execution, sharing the spotlight with celebrity chefs Masaharu Morimoto, Ken Frank, and Todd Humphries. The list of participating Napa eateries and food purveyors is equally of note, including Mustards Grill, Oenotri, ZuZu, Grace’s Table, The Girl & the Fig, Azzurro Pizzeria and Enoteca, Tra Vigne, Fish Story, Farmstead, The Model Bakery, C Casa, Barbers Q, and Gott’s Roadside.

And let’s not forget there’s comedy, to boot. In the midst of all this wining, dining, and dancing, the country’s top comics promise plenty of laughter, too. Jim Gaffigan, Demetri Martin, Aasif Mandvi, Anthony Jeselnik, Tig Notaro, Jim Breuer, Greg Behrendt, Wyatt Cenac, Rob Delaney, and Kristen Schaal, among others, ensure no dull moments.

Given the staggering lineup of musical acts, we asked Nicholas Allen, founder of Carte Blanche Wine and Soulshine Music LLC, for some festival and wine cliff notes. 1. The Black Keys & Carte Blanche 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. “The Black Keys are one of the best, if not, top, acts on the national touring circuit,” says Allen. “I’d pair this complex rock ‘n roll with a big red—the CB Cabernet is layered, surprising, with big notes, and a real powerful driving force behind it, just like the band.”

2. Jane’s Addiction & 2010 Keplinger Sumo. “If you’ve seen front man Perry Farrell perform, then you know that a bottle of red is most likely in his hand. I’d suggest he drink the Keplinger Sumo--a spicy, bold red that gets you fired up, and can perfectly handle the band’s hard-hitting rock.”

3. Zac Brown Band & Morlet Family Vineyards Couer de Vallée. “It's such a nice blend of cabernet culled from the top to the bottom of Napa Valley, and Zac Brown's music is such a nice collaboration of musical instruments and different musical genres, from country, to bluegrass, to reggae, to rock ‘n roll!”

4. The Black Crowes & 2010 Macauley Cabernet Franc, To Kalon Vineyard. “The Crowes consistently stay in the realm of blues-driven rock ‘n roll, but both the band and this wine offer so much more than one varietal or style could have ever been thought possible. Wines and acts like these are extremely rare, intricate, and passionate, and need to be embraced for the long haul.”

5. Alabama Shakes & Bure Family Wines 2010 Duration. “A perfect pairing for Alabama Shakes; it's got that power and elegance from the cabernet, and that depth and extra ‘umph’ (fruit) and nuance from the Cabernet Franc. These two—the band and the wine—will be around for a long time. Bure is becoming a staple Napa wine for cult-boutique collectors, and The Shakes are becoming a sought after staple on the music scene. I dread another ill-fated and ill-timed loss of talent such as Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Amy Winehouse. Like the finish on the Duration wine, I hope to see longevity in their musical careers.”

SMMoA Presents Precognito, Incognito

To mark their 25th anniversary, the Santa Monica Museum of Art (SMMoA) will host a gala event Thursday, May 9, followed by an exhibition and art sale on Saturday, May 11. Dubbed PRECOGNITO, the gala will kick off at 7 pm with a dinner conceived by Chez Panisse chef Alice Waters, and catered by Suzanne Goin of A.O.C. and Lucques renown.

During the gala, acclaimed gallery owner Margo Leavin and prestigious opera and theater director Peter Sellars will be honored for their contributions to the art world, while a live auction will offer the chance at covetable items like taking over the Chez Panisse kitchen for a day, or having chef Waters cook in your home. Guests will also have the opportunity to exclusively preview 700 original works by celebrated artists like Mark Bradford, Catherine Opie, Raymond Pettibon, Ed Ruscha, and Betye Saa, which will be up for grabs during the INCOGNITO benefit sale on Saturday (7 pm).

True to its name, the INCOGNITO art sale will comprise pieces by over 500 contemporary artists, but collectors will not know their identities until after purchase. Each artwork is signed and dated on the back, and available for $350 plus tax.

Lounge at Sofitel LA Reopens as Riviera 31

The Sofitel Los Angeles in Beverly Hills fêted a revamped Riviera 31 lounge on May 3, with an event featuring finger foods from chef Marius Blin, music by DJ Gabriel Diggs, and performances from Zen Arts LA. The opening celebration showcased the lounge’s refined décor, which includes a black, white, and red color scheme, and classic photography by Edward Quinn.

Now opened to the public, guests at Riviera 31 can opt for a low leather chair at a large communal table or snag a spot at one of the many banquettes, where craft cocktails are prepared tableside. The beverage menu by Matthew Biancaniello pays homage to the classic libations of the Riviera, but with a creative twist—the Negresco, for example, adds a rim of ghost pepper salt to a smoked mescal and tequila cocktail, while the Thirty One combines Bulleit rye and punt e mes, Cointreau, maraschino, sea salt, and orange.

To pair with the drinks, chef Blin has crafted a menu of sharable small plates that range from a flight of French fries to a half-dozen oysters, as well as more substantial items like steak frites or fennel pollen roasted shrimp. Savvy women expect more than just a pretty face when it comes to what they wear on their wrists. Fresh off the heels of this year’s BaselWorld, the category of automatic and mechanical watches, once reserved for men, is undergoing its own women’s liberation movement.

Not reliant on battery power, mechanical watches come in two categories: hand-wound and automatic. With a wind watch, turning the crown transmits energy to the main spring, where it is stored. As the wound spring uncoils, it releases the energy necessary to activate movement in the gear train and causes the watch to tick. An automatic watch is fitted with a rotor that allows the timepiece to wind itself, when the wearer moves her wrist and the rotor or oscillating weight spins.

Typically, mechanical calibers are hand-assembled from hundreds of tiny parts to form a horological marvel that keeps time in perfect harmony. The movements are often elegantly finished with engraving and detailing that is visible via a transparent caseback.

These highly engineered timepieces feature such functions as calendars, moon phases, and chronographs. The Roger Dubuis Excalibur 36, for example, offers classic craftsmanship within a beautiful case that is popular here. “The combination of form and function offers an incredible keepsake with a style that transcends time and trends,” says Gianfranco D’Attis, president of Roger Dubuis North America.

“We have been improving the ladies’ line,” says Thierry Stern, president of Patek Philippe Worldwide, which has been creating women’s mechanical watches for more than a century and a half. “Even though we have a lot to offer women, our female clients have been requesting something more complicated. Now we can deliver that.” Stern’s wife, Sandrine, is head of the design division and is bringing a woman’s eye and touch to the newest ladies’ complex mechanical watches.

Similarly, Blancpain has been dedicated to building a key collection of women’s mechanical timepieces, focusing on alluring, modern designs and functions that run the gamut from complete calendars to the just-unveiled grande date chronographs. All of its calibers are built in-house.
