Nowadays, Oliver Peoples stores dot the US, and there is even an outpost in Japan. “We’ve really become a trusted name,” says Leight, sitting in his office where, just beyond his 27-inch Mac, he has a bird’s-eye view of his flagship in Sunset Plaza. The serene space is accented with Balinese-inspired pieces and designed (like several of the Oliver Peoples stores) by Ilan Dei. “I like the chaos of Sunset and popping over to the store, but I separate myself here to design,” says Leight, who says he finds inspiration everywhere, from colors in nature to characters in a photo. His coffee table boasts an eclectic selection of books, including Carine Roitfeld: Irreverent and Classic Hendrix, while issues of The Surfer’s Journal and a surfboard stamped 15 years ago with the OP logo nod toward his passion for sun, sand, and surf. Leight’s screen saver is an aerial view of his beloved home in Kauai, a family escape nestled on a private beach and surrounded by botanical gardens. “I started going to Kauai in my 20s, and I always dreamed of owning a home there,” he says. “I just never thought it could happen.”
