Celebrating Hewlett-Packard Company

Satjiv Chahil and Serena Williams in Kenya
Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), along with senior vice president of global marketing Satjiv S. Chahil, are revolutionizing philanthropy in the field of technology. HP is providing Los Angeles with much-needed support at a time when funds for education are low. The company has provided equipment and technology for a number of organizations, including The MLA Partner Schools (formerly Mentor LA)—a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing the schools and neighborhoods in the most disenfranchised communities of LA. Bob Gazzale, president and CEO of the American Film Institute (AFI), says HP is among Los Angeles’ most significant contributors—not only to his organization but also to the creative community at large—thanks to donations of state-of-the-art technology for moviemaking and special-effects development and editing. HP also partners with Jeffrey Katzenberg’s pre-Oscar bash, The Night Before party, which raises funds for the Motion Picture & Television Fund.
IRENA MEDAVOY: How does HP partner with such illustrious people all over the world?
SATJIV CHAHIL: We decided to celebrate the accomplishments of our customers whose lives have been impacted through the use of our technology. We selected these “achievers” from the worlds of sports, music, film and fashion. There is not a country in the world that isn’t inspired and influenced by stars from these categories. Therefore we endorse them and do not ask them to endorse us. We treat our relationships with these people as partnerships in which we support their causes through our technology contributions.
IM: HP partnered with Serena Williams to open a school in Kenya. Tell me about that collaboration.
SC: Together we opened a secondary school in Kenya in November 2008. In Nairobi the prime minister held a press conference to acknowledge HP partnering with Serena to bring the latest technology to the remotest parts of Africa. She completely inspired and charmed the entire creative team at HP. She has a keen sense of design, a great sense of humor and a passion to make a difference in people’s lives.
