Fall for Fashion

Here in Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world, it thrills me to think of all the talent we’re surrounded by. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that our September issue celebrates two of the city’s most dynamic forces—television and fashion. And who better to lead the celebration than our inimitable cover star, LA local Heidi Klum, who recently brought the highly anticipated sixth season of Project Runway to her home turf (finally!). Check out our cover story on page 122, and see what the ever-enterprising Klum has to say about motherhood and her Emmy nod.

On another stylish note, LA further solidified its standing as a fashion force to be reckoned with when Pasadena’s own Rodarte clinched the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Award. Within these pages, we salute Rodarte, as well as several up-and-coming Los Angeles-based designers, all of whom have contributed mightily to making this city a growing fashion mecca. From local supermodel Chanel Iman and world-champion Laker/ clothing designer Lamar Odom to Guess’ Paul Marciano and the incomparable wunderkinds Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, we’ve got it all.

Enjoy the last few days of summer, and while you’re out there, be sure to look around and take note of what a fabulously fashionable city Los Angeles really is.

The Story We Tell

It was the seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals, a game of mythical proportions in NHL hockey. The legendary and reigning Stanley Cup champs, the Detroit Red Wings, were tied at three games with the underdog Pittsburgh Penguins. I’m listening to the TV announcers wax poetic about the game as I get ready for an event. It’s background noise until one of the sportscasters starts talking about what the Penguins coach said to his players in the locker room in the minutes leading up to the history-making game.

According to the announcer, the coach rallied his team with the following words: “The pen is in your hand tonight, gentlemen. You write the story.” I stopped what I was doing. It was so simple and yet so absolutely true. The pen was in the hands of the Penguins players that night (who went on to beat the much-favored Red Wings for the Stanley Cup title), but it is also in my hand—in your hand—on much less spectacular occasions.

Of course, the pen is figuratively in our hands every day with the decisions we make and the lives we create for ourselves, but it is also quite literally in my hand and my team’s hands with every issue we put out. Part of the story we are telling this month is that of the incredible and evergrowing fashion scene in Los Angeles. On the following pages, we highlight many of the designers making their names known in LA and on a national level. CC Skye, Clare Vivier and Ashley Ann of Myne are just a few of the women who inspire me and who have created their own lines of accessories, purses and clothing, respectively. (Naturally, I’m obsessed with all of their designs.) These women are holding tightly to the pen in their hands and writing their stories every day—stories of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

I hope you enjoy this issue, but mostly I hope you acknowledge that the pen is indeed in your hand, and I hope you’re writing a story you’d want to read.

Sincerely,
