Let's Hear it for the Boys
From its very inception, this city has been home to risk takers and bold thinkers. When Spanish governor Felipe de Neve set out to settle Los Angeles in 1781, he had to scour the desert to find a scant 11 brave men willing to put down roots in the barren pueblo, despite generous incentives of money, land and livestock. That entrepreneurial spirit has since been adopted by many iconic Angelenos. In fact this city has been built by men so recognizable, they can be identified by one name only: Kerkorian, Redstone, Murdock.
This month as we celebrate the many fabulous men of our city, I am reminded of those who helped shape this City of Angels, past and present. From The Case Study House Program architects Neutra, Eames and Koenig—who defined our hills—to today’s titans, Sam Nazarian, Frank Gehry and Brad Korzen, we remain a design powerhouse to be reckoned with. Our “Entertainment Capital of the World” moniker remains unchallenged, thanks to residents such as Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jerry Bruckheimer, while our palates remain satiated by the unparalleled talents of chefs Wolfgang Puck, Gordon Ramsay and Kerry Simon.
Our hearts are warmed by the life-altering philanthropic pursuits of people such as Eli Broad and also by men like Jimmy Esebag, who so generously opened his home to us for our Heidi Klum Emmy event. And it goes without saying, the never-ending supply of fantastic eye candy in this city never disappoints. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, our October cover with Jon Hamm and his classic Hollywood good looks was one example, and this month’s cover subject, Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey, is another. (Many thanks to my husband for so openly allowing a woman to dream.)
Gentlemen, you make life worth living, and we celebrate you!
Cheers,
