Band of Friends

There's no shortage of inspiring people in this town, but this month we’d like to give a shout-out to an extra-special bunch who make us all step up our own game.

In this issue, my good friend Ben Silverman sits down with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to talk about Newsom’s gubernatorial campaign and what he loves most about LA; Rev Run shares some of his famous words of wisdom so widely read on Twitter; and everyone’s favorite hotelier, Jeff Klein of the Sunset Tower Hotel, gives us the lowdown on things he can’t live without.

Meanwhile, David Arquette brings us the story behind his fashion label, Propr, which he cofounded with his friends Ben Harper and David Bedwell. Check out the brand’s pop-up boutique on Abbot Kinney for ways to step out in style this season. And for a touching read, don’t miss Kevin Connolly’s story about his passionate commitment to the cancer-prevention campaign Men For Women Now and why this is a cause we can’t ignore.

From celebrated actors such as Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J to our special Power Players section devoted to men, read on and you’ll see why it’s our pleasure to be associated with this cast of characters, this band of LA brothers.

The Y Chromosome

When we decided to do a men’s issue, I’ll be honest: I was excited. After all, what woman doesn’t love focusing on, obsessing over and celebrating the male species? And if it’s for your job? Even better.

I am the youngest sister of two older brothers and the daughter of a young-at-heart father, so to say I grew up in a male-dominated household is to put it lightly. It seems like there was football on the TV or in the yard at all times (during more trying times, I was used as the football). Therefore it is no great challenge for me to have to focus on all things male—after all, growing up, it was the boys’ opinions that ruled my house.

With this issue, we celebrate some of the amazing men that call Los Angeles home and try to highlight a few things we know they love, including great male fashions (page 84) and the key to the perfect boys’ getaway in Vegas (page 116). And who could be more perfect for the cover of a men’s issue than many women’s (including my mother’s) favorite man, Patrick Dempsey (aka McDreamy)? He is a phenomenal example of a Southern California stud—he’s adventurous, kind, oh-so handsome and most importantly, a devoted family man (page 100). In addition to Patrick, we celebrate some other “Men We Love” with a story highlighting a few good LA men we just can’t get enough of (page 104). You’ll be moved by Norman Ollestad, inspired by Blake Mycoskie, impressed by Paul Colichman and excited to start TiVo-ing Max and Jason. But don’t take my word for it—turn the pages to learn more.

So enjoy this issue and don’t worry, even though it’s our “Men’s Issue,” we have a feeling women are really going to like it too.

Enjoy,
