Awards Season Cometh
He’s 13.5 inches tall, weighs 8.5 pounds, is gold plated, and once—during WWII—was made only of plaster. He’s the most coveted icon in Hollywood. Welcome Oscar. Welcome March!
Even before the first gleaming statuette is presented, the Oscar red-carpet fashion race is as hotly debated and obsessed over as who the winner is. Months of preparation come down to just a few minutes, with nominees hoping to capture the attention and adulation of an anticipated one billion viewers. It’s an awards-season horse race of publicists, agents and managers meticulously crafting their clients’ images, while stylists and designers trade sketches and samples in an attempt to create the ultimate Oscarworthy look. All of the hard work culminates in a glorious evening of high fashion, celebrity and entertainment. Who’s wearing who? Who’s winning what and—sometimes even more interesting—who didn’t take home a trophy you thought would? It’s a fashion voyeur’s dream come true—a perfect confluence of events to honor the world’s most prominent designers and compelling industry deities.
Beyond providing us with endless watercooler chatter, the 82nd Annual Academy Awards presents the perfect platform for us to celebrate our Spring Fashion issue. The inevitable best- and worst-dressed lists that accompany awards season have become a national pastime. In order to steer clear of your own fashion dilemmas, turn to our “Beauty and the Beach” feature starring Grey’s Anatomy’s Jessica Capshaw modeling some of the hottest looks under the sun. Our editors’ and contributors’ style must-haves will also help you reach the pinnacle of your personal “best-dressed” list. For the latest from emerging designers, check out one of the many u?berchic events this month during LA’s Fashion Week. And join us as well at California Market Center’s retrospective of 110 years of local fashion, also taking place March 19.
Springtime. The Oscars. Fashion. It’s enough to make a girl giddy. Los Angeles, we adore you—take a bow.
