Los Angeles the Beautiful
In honor of our Real Estate and Design Issue, we asked our contributors their favorite building or space in Los Angeles, which got me thinking about my own beloved spots in our fair city. So what do I consider my favorite—the place I would choose to go above all others? The place that makes me feel the most at peace?
The candidates flickered though my mind like scenes from a film. Maybe Soho House West Hollywood? Its comfortable library-chic sitting-room area feels like the kind of place where a screenwriter could sit alone for hours, lost in the words of his own creation, or where a deal could be made over a midday glass of whiskey. And the private club’s 360-degree wraparound deck provides one of the most spectacular views of this city I have ever seen.
Or perhaps my favorite space would be the obvious one—the beach in the early-morning hours, when the mist is still rising off the water, giving the sand and endless blue of the ocean an idyllic haze. It’s in those moments I always think how lucky I am to live here.
Or could it be the charming back patio of Dominick’s, one of my favorite go-to spots? Or maybe the terrace of the Malibu Beach Inn, where sometimes you have to speak loudly so you can be heard over the crashing waves beneath you. There are the spectacular grounds of The Getty, the quaint hills of Beachwood Canyon, the incomparable atmosphere of the Hollywood Bowl and so much more.
I don’t know how our contributors limited their picks to just one spot or space. For me, this city simply offers too many to choose from, so I will just have to settle on an answer that is a bit of a cop out—LA in its entirety is my favorite place. How’s that for avoiding the question?
Here’s to a wonderful spring in our beautiful, inspiring city.
