The arrival of spring in LA is subtle, unlike in my home state of Colorado, where the change of seasons is obvious and marked by a crispness in the air, the return of birdlife, and beautiful perennials peeking their first green leaves through the melting snow. When I was a child, we would celebrate spring by creating May Day baskets filled with daffodils, hyacinths, and chocolates. We’d leave each ribbon-adorned package anonymously on a neighbor’s doorstep, ringing the doorbell before hiding to watch their reaction as they discovered the gifts. It was a gesture that demanded no acknowledgement, no thanks, yet spoke volumes to the sense of community that existed there—a testament to the simple acts that make life so rich.
With spring upon us, I am reminded that even in Los Angeles, a city of 10 million people, there is still an important sense of community spirit, and we as a magazine are fortunate to participate in many important local causes. On May 16, YWCA GLA hosts its Phenomenal Woman Awards Luncheon, which raises funds for the organization’s various programs and services, including those for child development and job training. Right on its heels, the Nancy Davis Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis celebrates its 19th Annual Race to Erase MS gala, a star-studded affair at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. And on June 14, Casa del Mar serves as the setting for the 16th Annual Los Angeles Dinner To Benefit Conservation International, which supports a global initiative of astounding importance. In a season of rebirth and renewal, we hope you’ll join us in supporting one of these great organizations by attending an event, making a donation, or volunteering your time.
Here’s to a beautiful and inspiring spring for all!
