Growing up surrounded by his father’s vinyl and surfboard collections, Ry Cuming had his path in life figured out at an early age. Today this Aussie surfer/singer-songwriter excels both in the water and on land, as evidenced by his debut album, aptly titled Ry Cuming; his recent gig touring with Maroon 5; and a new promo deal with Roxy/Quiksilver.
I knew I wanted to be a musician when... I heard Jeff Buckley’s album Grace for the first time.
My favorite venue to play is... a living room, surrounded by good friends, wine and food—or on the beach.
My first album was inspired by... my life in all ways: love, lust, heartache and growth.
What I love most about living in LA is... versatility. I can live in a big city with a lot going on and then run out to Malibu every day and surf.
What I miss most about my native Australia is... the ocean and friends and family. I miss parts of the culture, too—Aussies are very conscientious and laid-back.
When I’m in the ocean, I feel... at peace. It really balances me.
I got into surfing when... my dad put me on his board as a little naked kid.
I believe in an eco-conscious lifestyle because... that’s how I grew up and what I have been surrounded by.
Touring with Maroon 5 was… a dream realized in many ways. To be playing those huge venues was very humbling and at the same time a lifelong wish.
