The ME Barcelona
Ever the cosmopolitan city, Barcelona ratchets up its hip factor with the opening of ME Hotel’s latest venture, the impressive ME Barcelona. The modern glass-covered building, designed by French architect Dominique Perrault, fits perfectly in Barcelona’s growing “Innovation District” (think Highland Park or New York’s Tribeca), a neighborhood in the midst of rejuvenation—blink and it will be the area everyone is talking about. The 30-story building’s design is unique in that it lies in two vertically stacked rectangular pieces, one grounded, one extending toward the sky, clearly a look toward the future. The contemporary exterior flows smoothly into an edgy, modern interior as customized music greets guests in the airy, welcoming lobby. With the feel of a spacious loft, the ground floor houses check-in, the concierge, and the Sky Food Bar, a perfect spot for a predinner cocktail or a quick breakfast on the go.
Next, an elevator whisks you up to your choice of 259 rooms and suites, all with either ocean or cityscape views and minimalist interiors that are luxe yet cozy, with amenities like 32-inch interactive plasma TVs, surround-sound speakers, WiFi Internet access, MP3 docking stations, 300-threadcount linens, down pillow-top mattresses, and Aveda organic bath products to be enjoyed under oversize rainfall showerheads. VIP guests can head to an exclusive floor, the Level, which offers 14 deluxe rooms and suites, the Presidential suite, and the Living Room, a pleasing hideaway for lounging, working, or playing Nintendo Wii with cocktail, espresso, or snack in hand.
The 24th floor boasts Dos Cielos, a restaurant serving dishes created by chefs Javier and Sergio Torres with a focus on fresh ingredients and innovative dishes that diners can watch being prepared in an open kitchen. The dining room offers stunning views of the mountains, while the outdoor deck presents a bird’s-eye view of the sea. After dinner, take the party to Angels & Kings on the sixth floor, the first European outpost for the boîte, founded by musician Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy and partners. On the poolside deck, guests at Angels & Kings enjoy cocktails, mini bottles of tonic or soda kicked up with shots, and small bites in outdoor cabanas or in Angels & Kings’ inimitable vintage and Victorian-themed bar, with its black-glass chandeliers and funky art installations.
