KTLA Morning News's Real Star
by Adam Preskill
Kalina Rahal never knows what the morning will bring, but she has to figure it out quickly. "Imagine going to work everyday with four anchors, three reporter and three helicopters at your disposal." says Racal, "and you don't know what will happen, where you'll send them or what will break when the show is on the air. The adrenaline rush is amazing— I can honestly say I'm addicted to it."
While most of the city is still settling into its coffee buzz, Rahal is in full swing as a producer of the Emmy-winning KTLA Morning News, a job she clearly relishes. "I love morning news," says Rahal, "despite the awful hours, despite the stress and despite the fact that for whatever reason morning news is considered less prestigious than a nightly newscast— which I totally disagree with."
Rahal is no stranger to the alarm clock. She got her start at just 19 as the producer and anchor of a morning-news show in her native Bulgaria. Before long, the beautiful blonde had become one of the country's best-known newscasters, cohosting a daily morning show with actor Bashar Rahal, now her husband of nine years.
But in 1999, the couple left the limelight of their home country and moved to Southern California, where Rahal took a job as a production assistant at KUSI Morning News in San Diego and started working her way back up the production ladder to her current position at KTLA. "It was quite a fall form an established national anchor to a production assistant," she says, "but the challenge never bothered me."
All those years of little sleep should serve Rahal well in her latest production: motherhood. She recently gave birth to the couple's second child.
