Men’s Pop-Up Shop: Shelter Half
An afternoon at the lounge-style shop can mean walking away with a pair of khakis, the perfect manly chair, or simply a cup of Joe.
March 16, 2012
Located among South La Brea’s stretch of design stores, Shelter Half is a temporary men’s marketplace full of clothing, furniture, leather goods, home accessories, and vintage books. The brainchild of Davide Berruto and Camilla Trigano, of eco-friendly Environment Furniture (environmentfurniture.com), the 4,200-square-foot space is open through May, selling goods made by American brands such as RTH, Save Khaki, and Jacob Bromwell. Reminiscent of a hip downtown loft, the shop bills itself as “part showroom, part salon” with a book nook, courtesy of Arcana, cozy couch lounging area, and coffee corner pouring lattes and like made with LA’s Handsome Coffee beans. Shop a bit, sit a spell, support American brands—we like it. 161 South La Brea Blvd., LA, 323-936-0225

March 13, 2012
With a healthy mix of stars and rockers, such as Cindy Crawford, Steven Tyler, Rachel Zoe, Dave Matthews, and Justin Theroux, the Ninth Annual Stuart House Benefit was the place to be last Sunday. Held just steps away from the John Varvatos flagship, on the corner of Robertson Boulevard and Melrose Avenue, the day-long benefit comprised a street fair of children’s activities, live auctions, shopping, food trucks, and a rare solo performance by Matthews. (The musician and close friend of Varvatos flew down from his Seattle home just for the occasion.) The John Varvatos store was open and a portion of the day’s menswear sales were donated to Stuart House, the UCLA children’s rape treatment center. In all, a whopping $700,000 was raised for the cause.

Kimchee ramen at Sai Sai
Redesigned and re-conceptualized, Sai Sai Asian Cuisine and Sushi Bar recently reopened as Sai Sai Noodle Bar at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Executive chef Jonathan Shin, formerly of Nobu West Hollywood, churns out pho, ramen, udon, and soba noodle soups with deep, complex flavors in short order time. Traditionalists will love the pork belly and woodear mushroom tonkotsu ramen with savory pork broth and black garlic oil, while seafood-lovers will immediately gravitate toward the luscious lobster miso ramen. The atmosphere is chic, neon-lit, and slightly reminiscent of an old-school diner. Guests can also choose from a selection of local micro-brews, California wines, sake, and a variety of mochi ice cream flown in from Hawaii. 501 South Olive St., LA

Petite Luxe: DVF for GapKids
Diane von Furstenberg shrinks her iconic wrap dresses to itty, bitty sizes—and celebrity moms can’t get enough.
March 08, 2012
At a launch party celebrating her collaboration with GapKids, Diane von Furstenberg proved that the old “like mother, like daughter” adage is as true as ever. Running around The Grove’s Gap store were the tiny tots of stars such as Milla Jovovich, Jessica Capshaw, and Alyson Hannigan, all clad in DVF for GapKids rompers, shifts, and, yes, wrap dresses. Mom-to-be Molly Sims was excited to get a sneak peek at the baby items, including a gender-neutral onesie that von Furstenberg herself helped Sims pick out. Shop the collection (size newborn to 14) when it arrives in stores and online on March 15.
Shin Salon Opens in Santa Monica
New York stylist Shin An brings her signature dry cut to Montana Avenue.
March 08, 2012
Run, don’t walk to newly opened Shin Hair Salon in Santa Monica, where owner Shin An (RIGHT) has brought her signature dry cut and expert coloring to a sunny wooden cottage on Montana Avenue. Renovated by Suhail Design Studio (suhaildesign.com), the space is simple yet artistic with attention paid to every detail, from a geometrically-carved wood ceiling to custom-painted partition screens to Asian-inspired wall installations.
When we met Shin, it became clear why the salon is so impeccable. Beautiful and bubbly, Shin has a real passion for what she does, and it shows in her work. While honing her skills at New York salons Mark Garrison and Paul Labrecque, An felt called to the west coast after an “epiphany” on Santa Monica beach with a friend some 10 years ago. “If you can imagine what peace feels like, that’s how I felt in that moment,” she said. “I knew I had to be here. I had a vision of my own place at the ocean.”
Arriving just months ago with her husband and two young daughters, Shin’s reputation as a top stylist and colorist helped to quickly establish her impressive LA clientele. Her dry cut ensures precision and a face-flattering shape while her work with color always remains bright and natural. (As a blonde, we must say our color has never looked better.)
In addition to offering styling services, Shin employs an expert eyebrow threader and sells home and hair-care goods, including her Philip B. namesake products, Shin Shine and Shinade Pomade.
Don’t overlook the salon’s hidden treasure: A Zen outdoor patio that will soon operate as a full-service spa for clients to enjoy facials, manicures, pedicures, and massages under the sun. 1025 Montana Ave., Santa Monica, 310-310-3128
