Anton Chekhov fans will want to catch Calista Flockhart in The Seagull.
L.A. Theatre Works opens its 2012/2013 season with a revival of Anton Chekhov’s renowned play, The Seagull, starring Calista Flockhart, T.R. Knight, and Dakin Matthews. The troupe will perform the work only five times from September 20-23, at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater.
Flockhart will take on the lead role of Irina Arkádina, an aging actress who returns to her 19th-century Russian estate with her younger lover (Knight). There, she becomes entangled in a series of love triangles that would rival any daytime soap opera, while the characters around her deal with failed artistic careers and unrequited crushes. Ultimately, the play focuses on character development rather than plot, and will present an excellent opportunity for the stellar cast to show off their acting chops.
Other highlights from the L.A. Theatre Works season include a rendition of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice in November, and an interpretation of the Broadway hit, The Motherf***er with the Hat come January, which is slated to star Bobby Cannavale and Annabella Sciorra. All L.A. Theatre Works productions are recorded live for public radio, and can be downloaded from their website, latw.org. Tickets for The Seagull can be purchased here. 235 Charles E.
