On February 10, The Recording Academy honored the top performers of the year with the 55th annual Grammy Awards, but the show was just the culmination of a weeklong series of events hailing music’s finest. The Recording Academy hosted a number of charitable events and tributes, while performers like Janelle Monáe swung by local Los Angeles venue Sonos Studios for a surprise show.
Celebrations really fired up on the weekend, kicking off with a Pre-Grammy brunch on February 9 hosted by JAY Z’s Roc Nation and NOKIA music. The event, held at the exclusive Soho House in West Hollywood, featured specialty D'USSÉ Cognac cocktails and drew the likes of Chris Brown, Rihanna, Christina Milian, and, of course, JAY Z and Beyoncé Knowles.
The evening continued with the Pre-Grammy Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel presented by Clive Davis and The Recording Academy. The event honored Epic Records' Chairman and CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid with the President's Merit Award. Meanwhile, for late-night fun, Ne-Yo joined Compound Entertainment to host the fifth annual Midnight Brunch at STK featuring cocktails by Malibu Red.
On the big day, stars were invited to the Official Backstage Talent Gift Lounge. The lounge included a SOLSTICE Sunglasses boutique, where celebrities like Neil Patrick Harris and Sting were advised on the perfect shades for their face shape. Then—after stars like Jennifer Lopez and Taylor Swift turned heads on the red carpet—it was into the awards, where guests took in performances by Fun, Mumford & Sons, and Justin Timberlake.
This year’s awards included bands and performers in a multitude of genres. Fun, who put on a show-stopping number in simulated rain, received accolades for best song of the year and best new artist. Mumford & Sons won album of the year for Babel, while Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” took home honors for record of the year. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Paul McCartney, and Bonnie Raitt were among other award winners. The evening culminated with a tribute to Levon Helm by Zac Brown, Brittany Howard, Mumford & Sons, Elton John, and Mavis Staples.
After the awards, the celebration continued at soirees like the 2013 GRAMMY Celebration – The Recording Academy’s official afterparty, where guests sipped Patron and Ultimat vodka cocktails, and the Los Angeles Confidential afterparty, hosted with Harmony Project and Mary J. Blige (see photos of Los Angeles Confidential’s Grammys afterparty here>>).
